West Coast Wilderness Way

Travel The West Coast Wilderness Way, northwest of Hobart, to the national parks and wilderness of the state's rugged interior, past old towns, hop fields, orchards and fly-fishing streams.

Derwent Valley
This includes Mount Field National Park, the most accessible of all Tasmania's National Parks, the National Trust listed town of Hamilton, home to one of the State's premier craft galleries and Salmon Ponds where trout have been raised since 1864. A museum and interpretation centre is located in its beautiful grounds. A visit to the Australasian Golf Museum in Bothwell is a must for any golf enthusiast.

Queenstown
After 100 years of settlement, this former mining town retains the atmosphere of the old boom-times when it had a hotel on every corner. The Mt Lyell Mine is still producing copper and mine tours are available. You can fish for rainbow trout in nearby Lake Burbury.
Visitor Information Centre, Driffield Street.
Open daily 9am-5pm

Rosebery
This is the major mining town of the West Coast. On its eastern boundary is the commanding Mt Murchison. At Williamsford 8km south of Rosebery, is Tasmania's highest waterfall, Montezuma Falls. The area surrounding Rosebery has some of the most ancient rainforest systems in the world and is home to some unique flora and the oldest huon pine tree known to man.

Strahan
Situated on Macquarie Harbour, Strahan was the port for the mines. The Union Steamship building and the Customs House are impressive reminders of that era. Today this tiny town is the gateway to the World Heritage Area. River cruises to the Gordon River include Sarah Island, the state's first penal colony. Helicopters and planes offer flights with breathtaking views of the wilderness. Magnificent Ocean Beach, 6km from the town, is one of the most stunning in Australia.

Zeehan
Known as 'Silver City' with a population of 10,000 in its heyday, today the town is home to the Pioneer's Memorial Museum with material from west coast mines and the numerous ships that have been wrecked in the treacherous seas off the coast. Many of the old buildings, including the Gaiety Theatre and Grand Hotel, are still standing and are in everyday use which gives us an idea of its past importance.
